A 100% electric crossover. This is the new Volkswagen prototype

There is no doubt: we are heading for the beginning of a new era at Volkswagen. An era of electrification and autonomous driving and this new prototype is yet another example of that.

First was the hatchback, presented at the Paris Motor Show. Then followed the "loaf bread" at the Detroit Salon. Now, Volkswagen is getting ready to unveil the third element of the I.D. family, a set of 100% electric and 100% futuristic models.

The crossover still doesn't have a name, but one thing is certain: will be presented to the public at the Shanghai Salon, which takes place in the Chinese city from April 19th to 29th.

The best of both worlds?

With this new model, the German brand intends to demonstrate not only how multifaceted its MEB platform (platform dedicated to electric models) is, but also how diverse its future range of zero-emission models will be. The first electric vehicle derived from the new platform will be the production version of the first concept I.D., and will hit the market in 2020.

As for the new concept, Volkswagen describes it as a mix between a “four-door coupé and an SUV”, with a comfortable, spacious and flexible interior. A model tailored for off-road driving but equally efficient in cities, thanks to electric propulsion.

Here, one of the strengths of this prototype will be the autonomous driving technologies, previously named I.D. Pilot With a simple push of a button, the multifunction steering wheel retracts into the dashboard, allowing travel without the need for driver interference. In this case, it becomes another passenger. A technology that should only be debuted in production models in 2025 and, of course, after its proper regulation.
