After Aston Martin, will Lotus be the next British brand to bet on the SUV market?

Since Ahmad Fuaad was appointed CEO of Proton Holdings – the company that owns Lotus – there has been speculation about possible new production models for the British brand, including a 5-door saloon and a compact SUV.

According to Wang Ke Si, director of the Guangzhou Development and Reform Commission, Lotus will be considering the production of a new SUV in China, which will compete with models like the Porsche Macan and Audi Q5.

Everything indicates that the next SUV will favor light materials and a dynamic design. The engines should be based on the brand's sports cars – 1.8 liter 4-cylinder and 3.5 liter V6 engines – connected to an all-wheel drive system.

Production of the new model is expected to start next year at the factory in Guangzhou, China, and its launch for the Asian market is scheduled for 2019. It remains to be seen whether the next SUV will be marketed in Europe.
