We usually associate the image of American school buses with slow, yellow vehicles with a STOP sign placed on the side. However, there are exceptions and this very special “bus” is proof of that.
A man named Gerd Habermann and his drag race team thought that racing with the usual dragsters was too popular and so they created a jet bus for these races. According to VeeDubRacing (via YouTube) the Jet School Bus uses a Westinghouse J-34 jet engine from the 1940s, an engine that was once used in military fighter jets.
As expected the power values are not exact, but GH Racing points to something in the region of 20 000 hp. Gerd Habermann's team estimates that the jet bus is capable of covering 1/4 of a mile (about 400 m) in about 10s, but the best it could do in the video was to take 11.20s to cover that distance.
