SCG 003: the turning of the page of Glickenhaus

Anonim

SCG 003 is aptly named for being James Glickenhaus' third project, and unlike his two previous projects, which derive from a Ferrari base, SCG 003 will be the first root project of this American investor and collector

They may not be familiar with the name, but they should certainly recognize James Glickenhaus' exclusive Ferrari (pictured below). The P4/5, designed in Pininfarina's ateliers by designer Jason Castriota, is a tribute to the models of the P series (Sport Prototypes) from the 60s that competed in the most diverse tests and endurance championships.

Visually, we can almost consider him a direct heir to the beautiful P3/4, an example that Mr. Glickenhaus also has in his garage. Unveiled in 2006, underneath its stylish skin is a Ferrari Enzo, which supplied the chassis and the fantastic V12. Given the specificity and exclusivity of the project, this separated mr. $4 million Glickenhaus (about €3 million at current exchange rates). An investment that will have been worth it, looking at the end result.

But it was not an impediment for a second prototype to be ordered in 2009 with the aim of competing in endurance events. We would only see the P4/5 Competizione on circuit in 2011, and unlike the P4/5, in order to be integrated into the GT2 class, the SCG (Scuderia Cameron-Glickenhaus) used, alternatively, two Ferrari 430, one GT2 and one Scuderia. The styling mimicked the original P4/5, but the dimensions and proportions were much more compact due to the distinctive base.

He successfully participated in the Nürburgring 24h, achieving victory in his class in 2012, already in an evolution of the P4/5 Competizione, called M (Modificata), which used the services of a 4-liter V8 associated with a KERS system, similar to the one that it was used by Formula 1 at the time.

The genesis of SCG 003

It was this technology that sparked Mr. Glickenhaus' interest in his next project. The P4/5 Competizione, thanks to the addition of the KERS, allowed to take 15 seconds off a lap at the Nürburgring. The announcement that a new generation of hypersports vehicles was to arrive, using this technology, was synonymous with enthusiasm, as it could mean a new stage and competition on the circuits.

But none of that happened. La Ferrari, Porsche 918 and McLaren P1, according to him, became monsters of 1000hp, using the complex and costly KERS technology. Monsters that will never truly compete.

MOTTO SPEAK: Pirelli wants 18-inch wheels in Formula 1

This realization led to a reflection on the way forward in the future, with the solution lying… in the past. The inspirational P3/4 weighed just 816kg for 430hp of power. Its only Dino Competizione weighs just 590kg and delivers just over 230hp, not diminishing in the driving chapter compared to more recent machines.

Less is more! Simpler, lighter, smaller are indicators of how far the current hypersports are going in the opposite direction. Opinion similar to the one recently uttered by Gordon Murray, the father of McLaren F1, who also wants to put one more super or hyper sport on the street, a true successor to Mclaren F1.

SCG 003 will build on these premises. It will be the first SCG model to start from a blank sheet. It should have a power/weight ratio similar to that of the P3/4 (approximately 2kg/hp), and it is to be expected that the 3 wings it will have in the body will be integrated, similar to that found on the rear wing of the Porsche 959, with the number of wings being more one of the justifications for the 003 nomenclature.

NEW MARKET HEADING: Companies are buying cars. But how many?

Dimensions will be similar to your Dino, ie compact. As you can see in the images, the entire structure will be essentially in carbon fiber, which should help to achieve a low weight, with forecasts pointing to less than 1100kg for the road version. As for the propellant, there could be several. From a supercharged V6 to a Twin Turbo V8, it will only depend on the customer.

To be presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2015, it should participate a few months later at the 24h Nürburgring, with the possibility of having 2 cars present. Given the limited production capacity of SCG, the SCG 003 should be quite exclusive, with the possible production of a single unit per month, never for less than the 2 million euros already announced for the base price.

The road versions should be highly personalized, meeting the most peculiar tastes of your potential customers.

James Glickenhaus intends, with the sales, to obtain the necessary approval to be able to participate in events such as the 24H of Le Mans and Daytona, in the GTLM class. The two films below allow you to see the trajectory of the SCG and the lifting of the veil of the new SCG 003.
