Audi Sport quattro S1 returns to Pikes Peak

Guess who came back… The mythical Audi Sport Quattro S1, for many, the best rally car ever! (At least for me, it is…)

The controversial all-wheel drive model from the 1980s returns to the Pikes Peak Ramp, in the US, 25 years after Walter Röhrl set a record that remains to this day. Although all the cars in group B have been banned from the rally after numerous serious accidents, Röhrl and the machine, Sport quattro S1, return, on the 8th of July, to the State of Colorado to remember those homesick times.

Certainly, some of you may not know the Pikes Peak route, but be aware that it is about 20 km of pure effort. In addition to the wind characteristic of this famous mountain, the goal is more than 4,000 meters high, which makes everything much more complicated for the riders. You have to go back to 1987 to remember the record set by Walter Röhrl on that 600 hp machine in a climb of just 10 minutes and 48 seconds. It was a real festival of dust and strong emotions:

This time remains a record in the history of this ramp, despite the fact that some faster times have already been recorded, but this only happened after Pikes Peak received a new carpet with asphalted areas.

Luckily, we will have the opportunity to see Walter Röhrl and S1 ascend for the second time the winding Pikes Peak circuit which, even with the changes introduced, remains one of the most difficult in the entire world throughout its 150 curves. We are looking forward to…
