Mercedes-Benz patents water cooling system for tires

In order to keep the car's tires at a suitable temperature, Mercedes-Benz has developed a new cooling system.

Daimler, the parent company of the Stuttgart brand, recently handed in a patent in the United Kingdom for a new cooling system, which consists of spraying water directly onto the tires, in order to control their temperature. According to this patent application – which can be consulted here – the water would be stored in a small deposit.

Through a set of sensors that monitor the temperature of the tires (in addition to sensors on the windscreen and rear window), the control unit knows when it is necessary to act. The three spray nozzles are located under the wheel arches.

The aim is to prevent the tires from overheating on hottest days. In the most severe winters, this system prevents the formation of ice by spraying water at a slightly higher temperature. It remains to be seen whether this technology will be part of future Mercedes-Benz models.
