A simple touch... and the windows automatically darken

Touch-sensitive glass has long been tested in the automotive industry, such as SsangYong and Jaguar. But Faraday Future is preparing to go even further and implement smart dimming technology.

Over the past year, there has been a lot of talk about Faraday Future, but not always for the best reasons. From the ambitious plans to build a hyperfactory – which are said to have been flawed… – to the supposed investment funds of dubious provenance, the newly created American brand has not had an easy start.

Controversies aside, the California-based brand already presented this year, at CES in Las Vegas, its first production model: the Faraday Future FF91. More than the bold lines and the futuristic look, it's the technological package that surprises. But let's see: three electric motors with more than 1000 hp of total power, more than 700 km of autonomy, autonomous driving technologies and a performance from 0 to 100 km/h that won't owe anything to many supersports.

Furthermore, this future rival of Tesla is working on an innovative technology that will be implemented in the FF 91. With a simple touch on the windows, the Eclipse Mode allows to darken the side, rear and panoramic roof windows (tinted glass style), to guarantee greater privacy in the cabin.

This is only possible thanks to PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) technology, a kind of smart glass that takes advantage of electrical voltage, light or heat to regulate the amount of light that passes through the glass. A technology we already knew from the roofs of Mercedes-Benz roadsters – SL and SLK/SLC – called Magic Sky Control, with the difference that the dimming level is controlled by means of a button.
