It's official: Nissan confirms the acquisition of 34% of Mitsubishi's capital for 1,911 million euros, assuming the position of majority shareholder of the Japanese brand.

The shares purchased directly from Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC), were acquired for €3.759 each (average share value between April 21 and May 11, 2016), taking advantage of the devaluation of these shares by more than 40% in the last month, due to the controversy of the manipulations of consumption tests.

The brands will continue to develop, in partnership, platforms and technologies, as well as begin to share factories and align growth strategies. We recall that Mitsubishi was already involved in the production of city cars (so-called “kei-cars”) for Nissan, a very important segment for the brand in Japan, having produced two models as part of a partnership started five years ago.

The two companies, previously linked by partnerships at a strategic level, will sign, until May 25, the acquisition agreement, which, consequently, could place four Nissan directors on the Mitsubishi board of directors. The next Mitsubishi chairman is also expected to be appointed by Nissan, a right brought about by the majority position assumed.

The deal is expected to take place by the end of October, with the end of the year 2016 as the deadline. Otherwise, the contract will expire.
