Accident at Nürburgring causes death of spectator

The accident occurred today during an endurance race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 piloted by Jann Mardenborough flew over the fence and hit a spectator, who died on the spot.

It's a dark day for motorsport with the death of a spectator following an accident at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Jann Mardenborough's Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 flew off the runway, high enough to pass the fence protecting spectators. One of the spectators was mortally wounded and others who were nearby were transported to the hospital, without danger of life.

The accident took place at Flugplatz, one of the most famous bends on the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit. Nissan reacted immediately: “Today's events were a tragedy. We are deeply shocked and saddened, our condolences to the spectator who died and to the injured, as well as to their family and friends”.

He added that “the Nissan team is cooperating with the event's organization in an investigation into this accident”. Driver Jann Mardenborough got out of the car on his own foot, having been transported to the hospital as a precaution, also advanced the Nissan.
