Nearly 7 million euros involved in an accident at Goodwood

A Mercedes-Benz 300 SLS Porter Special and a Lister Jaguar Knobbly collided last weekend at Goodwood. An accident like so many others, were it not for the value of the vehicles involved.

Last weekend the Goodwood Circuit hosted the Salvadori Cup, a race dedicated to classic cars. Everything went according to plan until the qualifying session saw vehicle number 8, an extremely rare Lister Jaguar 'Knobbly' from 1959 piloted by Tony Wood, and vehicle number 23, an equally rare Mercedes-Benz 300 SLS 'Porter Special' from 1955, piloted by ex-F1 driver Jochen Mass, ended up in a million-dollar accident, with no consequences for the drivers.

The accident took place near the entrance to the pit-lane. Jochen Mass accuses Tony Wood of having suddenly slowed down the Lister Jaguar to enter the pit-lane, instead of completing one more lap and entering safety conditions by signaling the respective manoeuvre.

Jochen Mass still braked, but the 1955 Mercedes 300 SLS and its archaic brakes could not avoid the collision. A normal accident in any motorized event – and that would be just that… – if the two vehicles were not valued at around 6.8 million euros (1.3 million euros for the Lister Jaguar and 5.5 million euros for Mercedes-Benz). Fortunately none of the pilots were injured in the accident, but we leave you with the images of the accident and the state of the relics involved:
