Opel's new weapon for rallies is an electric Corsa

Anonim

After many years in the rally world (who doesn't remember the late Manta 400 and Ascona 400?), in recent times the presence of the Rüsselsheim brand in the rally stages has been limited to little Adam in the R2 version.

Now, when the time has come to replace the small townspeople in the rally specials, Opel has opted for a path that is, at least, different. Is that the model chosen to take the place of Adam R2 was… Corsa-e!

Designated Corsa-e Rally , this is the first electric car for rallying. In technical terms it keeps the electric motor from 136 hp and 260 Nm and the 50 kWh battery that feeds it, and the changes arose in terms of the chassis, suspension and braking system, even receiving a “mandatory” hydraulic handbrake.

Single brand championship on the way

Like the Adam R2, which was the “workhorse” of the ADAC Opel Rally Cup, the Corsa-e Rally will also have the right to a single-brand trophy, in this case the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup, the first trophy of its kind for electric cars, taking the place of the Adam R2 in Opel's “rally school”.

To prepare for the rallies, the Corsa-e Rally received competition shock absorbers.

Scheduled to start in the summer of 2020, the trophy will be disputed (in an initial phase) in the events of the German Rally Championship and in other selected events, with at least 10 events. Drivers who obtain the best rankings in the trophy will have the opportunity to compete in the European Junior Rally Championship with the future Opel Corsa R2.

Still under development, according to Opel Motorsport, the sale price of the Corsa-e Rally should be well below 50,000 euros.
