Jerrari. The unofficial ancestor of Ferrari Purosangue you may not know

Anonim

Closer to production, the Purosangue will mark the beginning of a new era at Ferrari, establishing itself as the Italian brand's first SUV. Without any direct ancestor, he has in the peculiar Jerrari the closest thing to a predecessor.

The Ferrari Jerrari was the result of yet another “clash” of opinions between the famous Enzo Ferrari and one of his customers (the most famous “confrontation” gave rise to Lamborghini).

Casino owner Bill Harrah saw one of his mechanics destroy his 1969 Ferrari 365 GT 2 + 2 in a crash during a snowstorm near Reno, USA. Faced with this accident, Harrah thought “the ideal for these conditions was a Ferrari 4×4”.

Legend has it that Bill Harrah was so convinced of the genius of his idea that he contacted Enzo Ferrari so that the brand could make him a car with those characteristics. It goes without saying that, as it did with Ferrucio Lamborghini, “il Commendatore” responded with a clear “no” to such a request.

Unhappy with Enzo Ferrari's refusal but still “in love” with Maranello's model lines, Bill Harrah decided to settle the matter himself and asked his mechanics to install the front of the crashed 365 GT 2+2 on the body of a Jeep Wagoneer, thus creating a “SUV Ferrari”.

Named Ferrari Jerrari, this “cut and sew” product also received the Ferrari's 320 hp V12, which became associated with the automatic three-speed transmission used by the Wagoneer and sent its torque to all four wheels.

A few years later, the Jerrari would eventually lose the V12 to another Jeep Wagoneer (this one without the front of a Ferrari and known as the Jerrari 2), turning to the 5.7 liter Chevrolet V8 that still animates it today.

With only 7000 miles on the odometer (near 11 thousand kilometers), this SUV "emigrated" in 2008 to Germany, where it is currently looking for a new owner, being for sale on the Classic Driver website, but without its price being revealed.
