Official. Toyota Aygo successor with Yaris platform

Anonim

After many rumors, Toyota officially confirmed that it will remain in the A-segment, with Toyota Aygo's successor using the Yaris platform, the GA-B.

An announcement against the cycle of other manufacturers, such as Renault, which has already confirmed that there will not be a successor for the little Twingo.

Truth be told, Toyota's decision to stay in the A-segment is no big surprise. After all, all the “signs” indicated that the Japanese brand was going to do it. Two years ago, he bought the factory in Kolin, in the Czech Republic, where the townspeople of the joint-venture between Toyota and PSA (now Stellantis) are produced, that is, the Toyota Aygo, Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108.

Toyota GA-B
Toyota's urban future will be based on the GA-B platform.

At the same time, about a year ago, not only Johan van Zyl, then director of Toyota Europe, confirmed the future of Aygo, but then vice president of Toyota Europe, current director of the brand in the “Old Continent”, Matt Harrison, revealed, on the sidelines of the presentation of the Yaris, that the new model could turn out to be a mini-crossover.

What's next?

For now, little is known about Aygo's successor (we don't even know if he will keep the name). However, there are two certainties: it will use the GA-B platform and it will remain faithful to the combustion engine (in the name of cost reduction).

By using this platform, Toyota's new city will allow, together with the Yaris and Yaris Cross, an annual production in Europe of 500 thousand units of models based on the GA-B platform.

According to Toyota, this will make it possible to reinforce “the economies of scale necessary to guarantee the key element of accessibility that A-segment customers demand”.

By sharing the platform with Yaris and Yaris Cross, Aygo's successor will manage to be profitable and foster economies of scale.

As for the engine, although the GA-B platform allows the use of hybrid mechanics, everything points out that the successor to the Toyota Aygo will only have a combustion engine, all to keep costs contained.
