Focused on becoming a leader in electric and sustainable mobility, Volkswagen decided to focus all its efforts in this area and one of the consequences was the total abandonment of its involvement in motor sport, thus eliminating the Volkswagen Motorsport GmbH division.

Based in Hanover, Volkswagen Motorsport GmbH employs a total of 169 employees who will now be integrated into Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg over the next few months.

Regarding this integration, Frank Welsch, Member of the Board of Directors responsible for the Development Division said: “The in-depth technical knowledge of employees in the competition department and the know-how gained from the ID.R project will remain with the company and help us -will create more efficient models of the “ID family””.

What about projects that still compete?

As you well know, in addition to the ID.R project, Volkswagen Motorsport GmbH is currently also responsible for the Polo GTI R5 and Golf GTI TCR. In relation to these, the German brand ensures that, despite the end of involvement in the competition, the long-term supply of spare parts is assured.

The production of the Polo GTI R5 for rallies will end at the end of this year.
