The votes of the 59 members of the COTY (Car of the Year) jury, coming from 22 European countries, have all been added up and, after all, the victory smiled to the Toyota Yaris in Car of the Year 2021.
It is not the first time that the Yaris conquers the award: the first generation conquered the COTY in the year 2000. Now in its fourth generation, the compact Yaris is once again repeating the feat with a strong set of arguments.
From its very competent hybrid engine, to its renewed and superior dynamic skills, to, we believe, the influence of the sporty GR Yaris, everything seems to have come together for its victory.
It was not, however, the clearest victory, with the other occupants of the podium, the new Fiat 500 and the surprise CUPRA Formentor , to give a lot of fight during the vote. Find out how the seven finalists were positioned:
- Toyota Yaris: 266 points
- Fiat New 500: 240 points
- CUPRA Formentor: 239 points
- Volkswagen ID.3: 224 points
- Škoda Octavia: 199 points
- Land Rover Defender: 164 points
- Citroën C4: 143 points
The ceremony for the disclosure and delivery of the Car of the Year 2021 award took place at Palexpo pavilions, in Geneva, Switzerland, precisely the place where the Geneva Motor Show should take place this year. Again, it was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Among the 59 members of the jury there are two national representatives: Joaquim Oliveira and Francisco Mota. As a curiosity, the results of the Portuguese juries gave Toyota Yaris and Volkswagen ID.3 the same number of points.
