On the way to Le Mans? Lamborghini could enter the LMDh category in 2024

After confirming the entry of Audi, Acura, BMW, Cadillac and Porsche in the LMDh (Le Mans Daytona Hybrid) category, also the Lamborghini seems to be considering entering one of the top endurance race categories (the other is the LMH, or Le Mans Hypercar, where Toyota, Alpine, Peugeot and Ferrari are present).

The decision has not yet been made official, however the RACER website states that Lamborghini Squadra Corse, the Italian brand's competition department, is preparing to enter the category that can compete in both the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and in the North. American IMSA Championship, in 2024.

For now, Chris Ward, Senior Director of Competition at Lamborghini, has yet to confirm with 100% certainty that he has entered the category. Still, in statements to the American publication, the Lamborghini executive said that the decision is 90% made.

Lamborghini's entry into the LMDh category is being prepared by Squadra Corse, its competition division.

What's left for 100%?

Unlike most manufacturers, Lamborghini does not usually get involved directly or officially in competitions, with the Sant’Agata Bolognese brand being rarely involved with a “factory team”. Well, it is precisely this tradition that is “delaying” the announcement of the creation of a car for the LMDh category.

Therefore, Lamborghini will be “waiting” for some teams to show interest in their car and then move forward with the project. On this hypothesis, Chris Ward has already “raised the veil a little”.

According to the “strong man” of the Lamborghini competition division, “there are more possibilities for growth working with a team that we already compete with in GT than if we “take care” of a team that competes with prototypes”. Even so, Ward confirmed that conversations are being held with teams used to competing in the top categories of endurance competitions.

The LMDh category promises to be more accessible than the LMH, and also allows access to the IMSA championship (which takes place in North America) in addition to the WEC. Which might even facilitate Lamborghini's goals of finding teams to join her in this new adventure. Regarding the LMP, we were already able to meet one of its participants live, the Peugeot 9X8:
