Hybrids "save" the national market in January

Anonim

The volume of new car registrations in January 2021 fell by 30.5% in passenger cars and 19.2% in the light commercial segment.

The ACAP statement says that: “The only drop was not higher “because in January several hundred hybrid vehicles were registered, whose tax was paid in 2020. This, due to the increase in the ISV, approved in the 2021 Budget” .

In other words, they are pre-registered vehicles destined to be sold over the next few months. The objective is to be marketed at prices that do not reflect the worsening of the measure proposed by the PAN and approved in the State Budget for 2021.

Hybrids averted a market slump in January that was predicted to be even bigger than it was.

What has changed in hybrids?

Because there are hybrid cars that have seen the amount of Vehicle Tax (ISV) grow by several thousand euros. Even cars with engines supported by mild hybrid technology, in order to be more efficient, suffered the effect of this aggravation.

For example, a passenger car with a 2.0 l diesel engine and mild hybrid system can pay 3000 euros more in ISV in 2021 than it paid in 2020.

This explains Toyota's 3rd position in the passenger car segment and the 120% change in Lexus registration numbers.

The numbers

A year ago, in January 2020, each of these segments retreated:
  • 8% in passenger cars
  • 11% in light goods

In two years this means accumulated losses of:

  • 38.5% in passenger cars (2019/2021)
  • 30.2% in light commercial vehicles (2019/2021)

In numbers what does this represent?

  • 10 029 passenger car registrations in January 2021, 5,655 fewer registrations than the 15 684 in January 2019;
  • 2098 registrations of light goods in January 2021, 817 more registrations than the 2915 in January 2019.

The leaders

As in 2020, Peugeot started 2021 to lead the registration table in Portugal. However, if in 2020 it led the two light commercial segments, in 2021 Citroën leads the light commercial vehicle.

The traditional leader of the two segments, Renault, only got the lowest place on the podium in light commercial vehicles. For passengers it is in 5th position. Effects of Renaulution leading to profitability through increased business margin rather than sales volume performance?

Renault Clio
Market leader in 2020, in the first month of 2021 Renault did not reach the place it was last year.

In the first three positions, with the highest number of registrations, were Peugeot, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Dacia, on the other hand, which has the Sandero as the best-selling model in Portugal to private customers, says the brand, did not go beyond 233 registrations in January 2021.
