After the Fiesta, it was the Ford Focus' turn to “surrender” to mild-hybrid technology, marrying the award-winning 1.0 EcoBoost to a 48V mild-hybrid system

With 125 or 155 hp, according to Ford, the more powerful variant of the 1.0 EcoBoost Hybrid allows savings of around 17% compared to the 150 hp version of the 1.5 EcoBoost.

Already used by the Ford Fiesta and Puma, the 1.0 EcoBoost Hybrid sees a small electric motor powered by 48V lithium-ion batteries take the place of the alternator and starter.

How does this system work?

As in the Ford Fiesta and Puma, the mild-hybrid system takes two strategies to assist the combustion engine:

  • The first is torque replacement, providing up to 24 Nm, reducing the effort of the combustion engine.
  • The second is torque supplement, adding 20 Nm when the combustion engine is at full load — and up to 50% more at low revs — ensuring the best possible performance.

In addition to the mild-hybrid system, the Ford Focus has a few more innovations, mainly at the technological level, the biggest novelty being the digital instrument panel.

With 12.3”, the new instrument panel has specific graphics for mild-hybrid variants. Another new feature is the reinforcement of connectivity with the standard offer of the FordPass Connect system, which will feature the “Local Hazard Information” system later this year.

Another unknown remains the arrival date of the new Ford Focus EcoBoost Hybrid in Portugal and its price in the national market.
