Destined to compete in the C segment, succeeding the previous S40 and V50, it thus manages to achieve a solid 100 thousand units sold per year on average. In Portugal, the importance of this model for the brand is reflected in the 50% share of the brand's total sales in the country.

The Volvo V40 also has a Cross Country version available that stands out for its increased ground height and a more robust appearance inspired by the SUV. Both versions share a comfortable and ergonomic interior and a focus on safety equipment – the V40 innovated by coming equipped with a pedestrian airbag, alleviating the consequences of being run over.

The range received a facelift during 2016, receiving several updates, including the adoption of the daytime running lights known as the Thor hammer.

Currently, the range has around five engines: three diesel and two petrol. Diesel has a 2.0 liter block with three power levels – 120, 150 and 190 hp. For gasoline, we have two blocks, one with 1.5 liters and the other with 2.0 liters, both turbo, with 152 and 245 hp respectively. Three streams are available depending on version. There is an automatic and manual option, both with six speeds and an eight-speed automatic second option.
