Historic. Volvo's 90 range reaches 1 million units sold

Anonim

Virtually immune to the crisis that has affected the car industry, Volvo Cars has one more reason to celebrate. After all, its 90 range reached the one million units marketed mark, combining the sales of the Volvo XC90, S90, V90 and V90 Cross Country.

These numbers refer only to the “new 90 range”, that is, they do not account for the sales achieved by the first generations of the XC90 (produced between 2002 and 2014) and of the S90 and V90 (produced between 1996 and 1998).

Therefore, this one million units have been sold since 2015, the year in which the second generation of the XC90 was launched, the first based on the SPA platform.

Acronym for Scalable Product Architecture, the introduction of the new platform with the second generation of the XC90 ushered in a “new era” for the Swedish brand. In addition to a new visual language, the Swedish SUV brought with it levels of connectivity previously unheard of by the Scandinavian brand.

This was followed, a year later, by the new S90 and V90. The first emerged with the aim of combating “German dominance” among premium saloons, while the V90 continued a 60-year “tradition” of Volvo in the production of vans.

Finally, the V90 Cross Country also ends up continuing a Volvo tradition, in this case the production of “rolled up pants” vans, something that Volvo has been doing for 20 years, having been one of the pioneers in the segment.

The XC90's successor is also shaping up to be the first chapter of a new era at Volvo — based on the SPA2, the evolution of the current platform — which will forget about alphanumeric designations to be identified with names.
