After Volvo Cars announced in 2018 that it would use NVIDIA DRIVE Xavier SoC technology in models based on the SPA2 platform, the Swedish brand has now strengthened its partnership with NVIDIA.

In this way, Volvo will be able to use NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip (SoC) technology, technology that is crucial to offer autonomous driving to the next generation of Volvo cars.

As you are well aware, one of the prerequisites for autonomous driving is the large processing capacity and that is precisely what this technology offers.

Volvo NVIDIA partnership

In total, the computerized artificial intelligence platform NVIDIA DRIVE Orin is capable of operating 254 tera (or 254 trillion) operations per second (TOPS)! This system will work in conjunction with software developed by Volvo and Zenseact.

With this partnership, Volvo Cars intends to be the first manufacturer to use this system in its new generation of models, models that will be based on the SPA2 platform. As for the first model of this generation, it will be the new XC90 that arrives in 2022.

Regarding this bet, Henrik Green, Volvo Technology Director, said: “We believe in partnering with the world's leading technology companies to build the best Volvo cars. With the help of NVIDIA DRIVE Orin technology, we can further elevate safety in our next generation of automobiles.”

The successor to the XC90 arrives in 2022 and will already benefit from the strengthened partnership between Volvo and NVIDIA.

As for the NVIDIA DRIVE Xavier processing unit, this will have the function of managing the vehicle's key functionalities — software, energy management and driver assistance — working in conjunction with the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system.
