Volvo. "We need more SUVs and fewer vans and sedans"

Volvo Cars will increase its SUV offer in the coming years and “cut” the more traditional bodies, such as vans and sedans.

Confirmation was made by the “boss” of the Swedish manufacturer, Håkan Samuelsson, on the occasion of the presentation of the new C40 Recharge, a 100% electric model that can only be purchased online.

The northern European manufacturer has grown a lot in recent years and at the top of the best-selling models are precisely two SUVs, the XC60 — Volvo's best seller — and the XC40, which somehow helps to explain this increasingly serious bet in this type of bodywork, which already represents 75% of the company's sales.

The C40 Recharge is the latest addition to Volvo's SUV family and bets, in addition to electrification, on a formula that has also proved to be a winner: the “SUV-coupé”.

Asked about the possibility of Volvo coming to present more models with this “C” designation and with this type of format, Håkan Samuelsson, speaking to the British at Autocar, confessed: “I don't know if we're going to call them C versions, but high cars it's something we can look forward to. People really like elevated driving positions. They won't be as square and will have smoother roof lines.”

“We need fewer versions of sedans and vans. Currently we have the V60, V90 (Cross Country and normal) and many sedans, of various sizes. We need to leave them. We'll still have them in the future, but probably less in quantity,” he said.

Remember that Volvo Cars is already working on a compact SUV that may be baptized with the names XC20 or C20 and an all-electric version of the XC90.

With the Swedish brand's focus increasingly on electrification, not least because in 2030 it will only manufacture electric cars, Samuelsson revealed that “a practical and lower car can be very interesting, especially when we become electric and need a smaller one. resistance to air”, not ruling out the possibility of a van powered exclusively by electrons.
