We drive the new BMW 2 Series Coupé (G42). BMW's most controversial rear?

Anonim

From the moment it was unveiled, the new BMW 2 Series Coupé has left no one indifferent. With controversial styling, the new 2 Series is far from having a unanimous image — especially in the rear section.

An image that did not affect the expectations generated around it, especially the M240i xDrive version, the most powerful in the range until the arrival of the M2.

And to clear up your first doubts, Guilherme Costa has already got his hands on him and tells you on video what he felt in the first kilometers behind the wheel of this “bimmer”.

What has changed?

Unlike the visual — always subjective — with regard to the platform there is no room for doubt: BMW resorted to the best it had at «home». In particular the CLAR platform, the same one found in the top ranges of the Bavarian manufacturer.

Thanks to this upgrade, the BMW 2 Series Coupé is now 105 mm longer and 64 mm wider than its predecessor. In terms of suspensions, there are also news: the new BMW 2 Series inherits the ground connections of the BMW 4 Series and Z4.

To this, BMW also added a 12% increase in torsional resistance and maintained the 50-50 weight distribution, and in the case of the M240i xDrive, we have the M Sport suspension as standard, with the adaptive M suspension being optionally available. .

BMW M240i

As standard, the M240i xDrive stands out for “wearing” 19” wheels, and as an option it is possible to equip 20” wheels and high-performance tyres.

3.0 liter in-line six

Driving this BMW M240i xDrive is a 3.0 turbo in-line six-cylinder engine. Compared to its predecessor, it gained 34 hp, now having 374 hp of power and a maximum torque of 500 Nm.

Thanks to these numbers, BMW announces for this M240i xDrive — the most powerful they can buy until the arrival of the M2 version — an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3s and 250 km/h of top speed (electronically limited) .

Managing this power delivery is an eight-speed Steptronic Sport gearbox — manual transmission… only in the future M2! — which adds shift paddles at the rear of the steering wheel and two very special functions: Launch Control and Sprint (for immediate acceleration while on the move).

It's the price?

Already available on the Portuguese market, the new BMW M240i xDrive has prices starting at 70 000 euros. Is the new M2 worth waiting for? The answer is yes if you are looking for the ultimate sporty interpretation of the BMW 2 Series Coupé (G42). If you're looking for something more “civilized”, the M240i has everything you're looking for in a coupé in this segment.
