Renault 21. 1987 Car of the Year Winner in Portugal

The intention of the Renault 21 was to be the successor to the Renault 18, but the innovations it brought to the time, both in terms of design and electronics, made it much more than that.

Since 2016, Razão Automóvel has been part of the Car of the Year judging panel

From the outset, the model was available in three body versions: Hatch, Sedan, and Station. Once again, like the winners of Car of the Year in Portugal in 1985 and 1986, the Renault 21 was also designed by Italdesign de Giugiaro.

The Renault 21 was in production from 1986 until 1994, and in Europe it surpassed the one million mark sold. During that time it has known different engines, from a 1.4 liter with about 67 hp, passing by 1.7 liters with various power levels, to 2.0 liters petrol and 2.1 liters Diesel — the latter with powers between 66 and 87 hp.

All versions had power steering, power windows, power mirrors, air conditioning and adjustable steering column. The TXE version also included ABS, electrical adjustment of the front seats and an anti-smash window system.

It was also possible to include automatic air conditioning, a sunroof and, in the case of the Station, two additional seats were included, totaling 7 seats — the 21 Nevada TXE was a pioneer in the segment and one of the pioneers in the world to offer the option of 7 seats in a van .
