THE Polestar 1 it's what we might call a real halo-car. Since its unveiling at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, this model has served as the brand's “flagship”. A real declaration of interests by the Scandinavian brand.
Perhaps for this reason, Polestar has decided that the last units of its elegant coupé can be purchased not with money but with… pieces of art. The idea is to exchange some units of Polestar 1 for works of art by famous artists.
About this idea, Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar and design director of Volvo Cars, said: “I love the idea of allowing artists and collectors to buy a Polestar 1 with art. It's such a special car that we wanted to find a unique way to celebrate it before its production came to an end (…) It's handcrafted, precious and tangible, therefore, very much like a work of art”.
How does the exchange work?
For those who might be interested, the good news is that Polestar did not specify the type of artwork it accepts as “currency”. In this way, the Swedish brand can accept paintings, photographs, sculptures and even NFT’S (Non-fungible token) — a special type of cryptographic token that represents something unique. Unlike cryptocurrencies, NFT's are not mutually interchangeable, representing something specific and individual, and cannot be replaced.
The decision as to whether an artwork is eligible or not is up to Theodor Dalenson, a recognized art consultant who has worked with museums around the world. If the piece receives the “green light”, then the renowned RM Sotheby's will evaluate the work to see if it is worth the 155 000 euros requested by the Scandinavian model.
After having the pieces of art for some time, Polestar will then auction them off, thereby obtaining the asking price for the plug-in hybrid that “marries” a four-cylinder turbo gasoline engine with two electric motors mounted on the rear axle with 85 kW (116 hp) and 240 Nm each to obtain 619 hp of maximum combined power and 1000 Nm.
