The Toyota GR Super Sport has already rolled in… Le Mans!

Anonim

In the same weekend that saw the TS050 Hybrid win the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the third year in a row, Toyota decided to show a little more of the Toyota GR Super Sport , the hybrid hypersport with which he plans to race in the “Le Mans Hypercar” (LMH) category.

In order to do so, the Japanese brand “took advantage” of being on the La Sarthe circuit and placed on the track a prototype of the GR Super Sport (we don't know if it's from the competition version or the road version) which is still very camouflaged.

Although in total the car only completed one demonstration lap with former Toyota Gazoo Racing driver Alexander Wurz at the controls, the truth is that this has already allowed us to see a little more of the hypersports future with which Toyota intends to try to extend his dominance in the world of endurance tests.

And the roof?

The most curious thing about the Toyota GR Sport that the Japanese brand took to the French circuit is the fact that it is presented without a roof, leaving in the air the possibility that the production model will have a removable roof.

Another hypothesis that has arisen is related to the possibility that the production version will abdicate the traditional doors, instead adopting a canopy, something that a new patent recently registered seems to confirm.

What is already known?

Given Toyota's intention to race in the new Hypercar class of the WEC (the LMH), one thing is certain: at least 40 units of a Toyota GR Super Sport version approved for public use will have to be produced.

As for mechanics, if the specifications are identical to those announced for the concept, the GR Super Sport should have 1000 hp of power, the result of the combination of a 2.4 l V6 twin turbo engine with electric motors, which are part of the Toyota Hybrid System-Racing (THS-R), directly inherited from the TS050.

For now, it is not known when it will arrive, how much it will cost or how many units of the Toyota GR Super Sport will be produced, even so, it has already waiting for it rivals like the Aston Martin Valkyrie, the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE or the version of the hypercar with which Peugeot plans to return to Le Mans.
