OM 654 M. The MOST POWERFUL four-cylinder diesel in the world

Anonim

Mercedes-Benz does not believe in synthetic fuels, but continues to believe in diesel engines. In addition to electrification, the German brand continues to invest in this combustion cycle to liven up its models.

Therefore, with the arrival of the renewed Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W213 generation) on the market — which underwent a slight update this year — a “vitaminized” version of the already well-known OM 654 diesel engine (220 d) will also arrive.

Launched in 2016, this 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, aluminum-block engine is now undergoing an evolution: the OM 654 M.

What's New in the OM 654 M

The block is the same as the OM 654, but the peripherals are different. The OM 654 M now delivers 265 hp of power against the 194 hp of the first generation (which will continue to be present in the E-Class range) that place it as the most powerful four-cylinder diesel in the world.

The animated versions with the OM 654 M engine will be marketed with the 300 d acronym

To increase power by more than 70 hp, from a block with just 2.0 liters of capacity and four cylinders, the changes operated on the OM 654 were profound:

  • New crankshaft with a higher stroke (94 mm) resulting in an increase in displacement to 1993 cm3 — before 92.3 mm and 1950 cm3;
  • The injection pressure rose from 2500 to 2700 bar (+200);
  • Two water-cooled variable geometry turbos;
  • Plungers with Nanoslide anti-friction treatment and internal ducts filled with sodium alloy (Na).

As many will know, sodium (Na) is one of the most used metals in the refrigeration systems of nuclear power plants due to its characteristics: stability and heat dissipation capacity. Inside the OM 654 M this liquid metal will have a similar function: to prevent the motor from overheating, reducing friction and mechanical wear.

In addition to the water-cooled turbos, the pistons with internal ducts with sodium alloy (Na) are one of the most ingenious solutions present in the OM 654 M. But they're not the only ones…

Almost mandatory electrification

In addition to these new features, the OM 654 M also has a precious help: a mild-hybrid 48 V system. A technology that in the not-too-distant future should be present in all engines.

It is a parallel electrical system consisting of a generator/starter and a battery, with two essential functions:

  • Generate energy to power the car's electrical systems (air conditioning, steering, driving support systems) releasing the combustion engine from this function, thus increasing its energy efficiency;
  • Assist the combustion engine in acceleration, offering a temporary increase in power of up to 15 kW and 180 Nm of maximum torque. Mercedes-Benz calls this function EQ Boost.

Also in the field of combating emissions, intensive work was also carried out to treat exhaust gases on the OM 654 M.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class
The “honor” of debuting the OM 654 M will go to the renovated Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

This engine now uses a state-of-the-art particle filter (with surface treatment to reduce NOx deposits) and a multi-stage SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system that injects Adblue (32.5% pure urea, 67.5% demineralised water) in the exhaust system to transform NOx (nitrogen oxides) into nitrogen and water (steam).

What can we expect from 300d?

When it hits the market, the OM 654 M will be known for 300 d — that's what you'll find on the back of all Mercedes-Benz models equipped with this engine.

Using the example of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class that will debut this 300 d engine, we can expect very interesting performances. In the 220 d version this model is already able to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds, and reach a maximum speed of 242 km/h.

It is therefore to be expected that this 300 d — which will be the most powerful four-cylinder diesel in the world — will be able to obliterate these values. With more than 265 hp of power and a torque that should surpass 650 Nm (EQ Boost mode) the Mercedes-Benz E 300 d should be able to fulfill 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds and surpass 260 km /h maximum speed (without electronic limiter).
