The Hyundai IONIQ 5 won the award for Car of the Year in Germany 2022 (GCOTY 2022 or German Car of the Year 2022), having been elected by a panel of automotive journalists and, for the first time, with a Portuguese judge among them.

Guilherme Costa, director of Razão Automóvel, who cumulatively assumes the position of director of the World Car Awards, was one of the three international judges invited by the GCOTY board.

At the end of October, the five models eligible for the title of car of the year had already been announced, each of them the winner in their respective classes: Peugeot 308 (compact), Kia EV6 (premium), Audi e-tron GT (luxury ), Hyundai IONIQ 5 (new energies) and Porsche 911 GT3 (performance).

In the end, it was Hyundai's 100% electric proposal that garnered the highest number of votes winning the desired title. The Germany Car of the Year 2022 award was presented to Michael Cole, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Europe, as well as Jürgen Keller, General Manager of Hyundai Motor Germany.

"That the IONIQ 5 has this award in such a competitive environment shows us that we have a vehicle that clearly distinguishes itself from its competitors. This victory also shows us that battery-powered electrics are relevant to our European customers. The IONIQ 5 is currently our most important model in our electrification strategy and a driver of our vision for zero-emission mobility."
