Hyundai and Motional, the global leader in autonomous driving technology, have just unveiled a robot taxi based on the IONIQ 5 . It is a level 4 autonomous vehicle and therefore does not require the intervention of a driver.
The first public appearance of the IONIQ 5 Robotaxi will take place at the Munich Motor Show, Germany, between the 7th and 12th of September.
With a technology-oriented design, the IONIQ 5 Robotaxi has more than 30 sensors — including cameras, radars and LIDAR — that guarantee 360º perception, high-resolution images and the detection of long-range objects.

Furthermore, it is equipped with advanced machine learning systems that rely on decades of data obtained under real driving conditions.
Designed and developed from the ground up to be fully self-driving, the IONIQ 5 Robotaxi features the spacious, technological and airy cabin that we praised in the IONIQ 5 test, but it has a set of passenger-centric features that allows interaction with the vehicle during the trip, such as redirecting the robot taxi to make an unplanned stop.

So that everything goes as planned, Motional and Hyundai have equipped this IONIQ 5 Robotaxi with various security systems, many of them redundant, so that the experience aboard this autonomous taxi is as safe and smooth as possible.

In addition, Motional will also provide Remote Vehicle Assistance (RVA) if the IONIQ 5 Robotaxi encounters an unknown scenario, such as a road under construction. In this situation, a remote operator will be able to connect to the autonomous taxi and immediately take over the commands.
Woongjun Jang, Director of Autonomous Driving Center at Hyundai Motor GroupFor the robotaxi based on the IONIQ 5 we apply various system redundancies, in addition to a set of essential technologies to ensure safety and comfort for passengers. By successfully integrating the Group's IONIQ 5 Robotaxi with Motional's autonomous driving technology, we are proud to announce that we have reached an important milestone on the path to commercialize our robotaxi.
Remember that this is Motional's first commercial vehicle, but it will only start traveling with passengers in 2023, through a partnership with Lyft.
