From beast to beast. This is the new GMC Hummer EV

THE GMC Hummer EV marks the return of the Hummer, not as a brand, but, as the name implies, as a model integrated into the GMC (GM division focused on the professional market, but with several pick-up trucks and SUVs aimed at the private market).

It is now an all-electric pickup truck, with a three-volume profile reminiscent of the original Hummer H1, where the windshield assumes a fairly upright position and the overall look is quite muscular — courtesy of the huge, jutting guard. -slush that contains 35″ wheels (tire+rim), which can go up to 37″ — but also sophisticated.

That more sophisticated look comes from parts like the LED lighting at the front, which reinterprets the face of the Hummer we used to know. The grille with seven vertical openings appears hidden, starting to serve as divisions between the various light elements: the headlamps and six additional elements, each containing a letter of the word “HUMMER”.

On the outside, a highlight is the roof — Infinity Roof — divided into three removable and transparent pieces, which we can arrange in the “frunk” (the front luggage compartment); and for the multifunctional trunk lid, inherited from the GMC pick-ups.

Jumping inside, it's really to ask: "Who are you and what did you do to the Hummer we knew?" Marked by block-like elements and straight lines, it has a functional but also particularly careful look. It stands out for the presence of two screens that are quite generous in size — 12.3″ for the instrument panel and 13.4″ for the infotainment system —, in addition to a wide center console that separates the front passengers.

Unstoppable? It seems so

Defined by its officials as an “off-road beast”, the GMC Hummer EV seems to have the ideal hardware for off-road practice.

Naturally it has four-wheel drive, provided by three electric motors (integrated in two units, one per axle), which guarantee 1000 hp of power and 15 592 Nm (!) — yes, you read well, 15 592 Nm… Ok… more it's true, as we've seen in other ads in the same “shocking” it is the value of torque to the wheel, already multiplied by the transmission ratio.

In addition to four-wheel drive, the GMC Hummer EV also comes with four-wheel drive. It has the particularity of allowing them to move diagonally at low speeds — the four wheels face the same direction — an ability called Crab Walk Mode in allusion to the particular way in which crabs move — an ability we have already mentioned on a previous occasion.

The suspension is pneumatic, which allows you to vary the ground clearance, having an "Extract Mode" that raises the suspension 149 mm (more than the ground clearance of many conventional cars) to ensure that the bottom — already coated and reinforced — don't scrape over the toughest obstacles.

Also helping to practice off-road driving, the huge electric pick-up comes equipped with 18 cameras, which even allow you to see what is going on under the vehicle when dealing with more delicate obstacles.

Hummer EV, electric and high tech

The 1000 hp — allowing 3.0s at 0-60 mph (96 km/h) — provided by the aforementioned three electric motors are powered by GM's new Ultium batteries whose capacity has yet to be announced.

However, it is known that the 24 modules that make it up should allow a range of more than 560 km. Charging this electric “super-truck” is in charge of an 800 V (direct current) fast charging system, compatible with chargers up to 350 kW.

Finally, the GMC Hummer EV also has semi-autonomous capabilities, coming equipped with the GM Super Cruise 8 that allows you to change lanes autonomously.

When arrives?

It will hardly reach Portugal or the European continent, but North Americans will see the new GMC Hummer EV reach dealerships in the fall of 2021, albeit only in the special launch version, First Edition, with prices starting at US$112,595 ( around 95 thousand euros),

In autumn 2022 the first “regular” version arrives, the EV3X, with three electric motors, but with less standard equipment than the First Edition, which also justifies the lower price of $99,995 (approx. 84,500 euros ).

In the spring of 2023, the EV2X version will be launched, with two electric motors ($89,995 or approx. 76 thousand euros); and only in the spring of 2024 will the entry-level version EV2 hit the market, which dispenses with most equipment for off-road practice, allowing the price to be lowered to $79,995, around 67,500 euros.
