Jeep Wrangler 4xe. Not even the icon of all terrain escapes electrification

Scheduled to reach the market in early 2021, the Jeep Wrangler 4x joins the Compass 4xe and Renegade 4xe in the “electrified offensive” of the American brand.

Visually, the main highlight of the Wrangler 4xe are the various finishes in the new “Electric Blue” color that appear both on the outside and on the inside and, of course, the “4xe” logo.

But if in the aesthetic chapter the Wrangler 4x opts for a certain discretion, the main novelty of the North American model appears under the hood.

To liven up the Wrangler 4x we find a four-cylinder petrol engine with 2.0 l and turbocharger, to which two electric motors are joined. These are powered by 400 V and 17 kWh batteries placed under the second row of seats.

The end result is a maximum combined power of 375 hp and 637 Nm . Already the transmission is in charge of an automatic transmission (torque converter) of eight speeds.

With regard to autonomy in 100% electric mode, Jeep announces 25 miles (about 40 km), according to the US homologation cycle.

Driving modes? there are three

In total, the Jeep Wrangler 4x has three driving modes (E Select). However, when the battery charge level approaches the minimum it starts to work as a hybrid.

As for the driving modes, these are:

  • Hybrid: uses battery power first, then adds gasoline engine propulsion;
  • Electric: works exclusively in electric mode while there is battery power or until the driver accelerates at full speed;
  • eSave: preferentially uses the gasoline engine, conserving battery power for when it may be needed. In this case, the driver can choose between Battery Save mode and Battery Charge mode via the Hybrid Electric Pages available in the UConnect system.

Speaking of the UConnect system, it also has “Eco Coaching” pages that allow, by monitoring the energy flow, to observe the impact of regenerative braking or to schedule charging times.

Also in the plug-in hybrid system chapter, the Wrangler 4xe also has the “Max Regen” function that maximizes the capacity of the regenerative braking system.

Electrified, but still “Pure and Hard”

In total, the plug-in hybrid version of Wrangler will be available in three versions: 4xe, Sahara 4xe and Rubicon 4xe and it goes without saying that all of them have kept the all-terrain skills recognized by the Wrangler intact.

Thus, the first two versions have permanent all-wheel drive systems, Dana 44 front and rear axles and a two-speed transfer box, as well as the Trac-Lok limited-slip rear differential.

The Wrangler Rubicon 4xe, on the other hand, features the 4×4 Rock-Trac system (includes a two-speed transfer box with a low gear ratio of 4:1, permanent four-wheel drive, Dana 44 front and rear axles and electric lock of both Tru-Lok axes).

In addition to this, we also have the possibility of disconnecting the electronic stabilizer bar and we have the “Selec-Speed ​​Control” with assistance in uphill and downhill areas.

In this more radical variant the Wrangler 4xe has lower protection plates at the front and rear, and rear tow hooks.

With regard to the angles for all terrain, the entry is 44º, the ventral is 22.5° and the exit is fixed at 35.6º. The ground height is fixed at 27.4 cm and the ford capacity is 76 cm.

With release date scheduled for the beginning of 2021, because while we still don't know when the Jeep Wrangler 4xe will arrive in Portugal, or how much it will cost.
