THE National Coach Museum was founded in 1905 and today consists of two buildings: the old Picadeiro do Palácio de Belém (Praça Afonso de Albuquerque) and the new building opposite (Av. da Índia), inaugurated in 2015.

This national museum brings together a unique collection in the world, made up of more than 9000 objects, which predominantly includes gala vehicles, some for travel and leisure, from the 16th to 19th centuries, and cavalry accessories.

It has been the most visited national museum in the country, with over 332 106 visitors registered in 2017. And today you can also visit it virtually:

The new National Coach Museum

The Project for the New Building of the Museu Nacional dos Coches was launched in 2008, to coincide with the celebrations of the Centenary of the Republic, in 2010.

With the foundation stone laid on February 1, 2010 and inaugurated on May 23, 2015, the Project was signed by Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha (Pritzker Prize 2006) in a consortium with Portuguese architect Ricardo Bak Gordon and Engineer Rui Stolen.

Despite the beauty and charm of the Picadeiro Real de Belém, the need to increase the Museum's exhibition area was always pressing. Thus, after 110 years of operation in the Old Picadeiro, the Museum started to occupy an area where the former General Offices of the Army were located.
