Opel Astra. What to Expect from the Next Generation of the German Compact

Anonim

The new generation of the Opel Astra should be unveiled next year, in 2021, and so, little by little, we are learning a little more about the sixth generation of the German compact.

Based on the platform of the future Peugeot 308 (an updated version of the EMP2), the new Astra should mark a radical change from the current in terms of style. This is stated by Mark Adams, Opel's design director, who in statements to the British at Autocar said: “what the Mokka is for its segment, the Astra will be for the C segment”.

According to him, “Mokka's key elements and boldness will be transferred to the other models, but we're not going to take its design and just give it a new shape. We will use the same “ingredients” and create models based on these key concepts”.

Opel Astra 2019

The next-generation Opel Astra is expected to take on a less conservative look.

This means that not only will the new Astra have a much less conservative look than the current generation (perhaps even less Germanic) but it will also have to be significantly influenced by the new Opel Vizor identity.

hybrids on the way

Bearing in mind that it will be based on an evolution of the EMP2 platform, it is unlikely that the new Opel Astra will have a 100% electric version.

On the other hand, plug-in hybrid versions are practically assured, something we've already seen happening on the Opel Grandland X. This way, if everything remains identical to the SUV, we'll have a front-wheel-drive, 225 hp Astra plug-in hybrid combined power, while the most powerful should present itself with 300 hp of combined power, all-wheel drive and, perhaps, with the GSi name, assuming itself as the sportiest version of the range.

Debuted by the Astra after the last restyling, the new Opel engines are expected to be overhauled with the end of this generation of the German compact.

Finally, taking into account that it will use a PSA platform, the range of Astra engines currently on sale should be abandoned — they are still all 100% Opel — and will use PSA mechanics.

Currently, the Astra and Insignia are the latest Opel models to have been developed under the aegis of General Motors and yet without PSA influence.
