Gasoline vehicles continue to gain strength in Europe, with an increase of 11.9% in the last quarter of 2019. In Portugal, this engine increased its market share by close to 2%, following the European trend.

The number of Diesel vehicles registered during the last quarter of 2019 fell by 3.7% in the European Union. Compared to 2018, Diesel registrations also fell in Portugal, with a current market distribution of 48.6%, which represents a drop of 3.1%.

Diesel vehicles represented 29.5% of the new light vehicle market during the last quarter of 2019. These are data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), which says that gasoline vehicles, in turn, accounted for 57.3% of the total market during this period.

As for chargeable electrified solutions (electric and plug-in hybrids), the number stood at 4.4% between October and December 2019. Considering all types of electrified solutions, the market share was 13.2%.

During 2019, almost 60% of new cars registered in Europe were gasoline (58.9% compared to 56.6% in 2018), while Diesel fell by more than 5% compared to 2018, with a market share of 30.5%. Chargeable electrified solutions, on the other hand, increased by one percentage point compared to 2018 (3.1%).

Vehicles powered by alternative energy

During the last quarter of 2019, this was the type of propulsion that grew the most in Europe, with demand increasing by 66.2% compared to 2018.

The demand for 100% electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles increased, respectively, by 77.9% and 86.4%. But it is hybrids (not externally rechargeable) that represent the largest share in the demand for electrified solutions, with 252 371 units registered between October and December 2019.

Looking at the five main European markets, all of them showed growth in this type of solutions, with Germany showing a growth of 101.9% in the last quarter of 2019, a result obtained thanks to the sale of plug-in hybrids and hybrids.

The remaining alternative solutions – Ethanol (E85), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Natural Vehicle Gas (CNG) – also grew in demand. In the last three months of 2019, these alternative energies increased by 28.0%, accounting for 58,768 units in total.

Portugal continues to prefer Diesel, although it closely follows the European trend in the demand for gasoline propulsion.

The Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP) shows that, in the last month of last year, 8284 gasoline-powered cars were sold against 11,697 diesel vehicles. Considering the period between January and December 2019, Diesel leads, with 127 533 units registered against 110 215 gasoline vehicles sold. Thus, Diesel recorded a market share of 48.6% during 2019.

Hyundai Kauai electric

We consider 2018 and verify that in that year the market share of diesel vehicles was 51.72%. Gasoline, with 42.0% of distribution in the passenger car market, increased by close to 2% compared to 2018.

Vehicles powered by alternative energy in Portugal

In December 2019, 690 plug-in hybrids were registered, but this was not enough to surpass the 692 registered 100% electric vehicles. But it is in hybrids that there is the greatest demand, with 847 units sold, making the latter the most sold type of vehicles powered by alternative energy in the last month of last year.

From January to December, 9428 hybrids, 7096 100% electric vehicles and 5798 plug-in hybrids were registered.

As for gas solutions, only LPG was sold, with 2112 units sold during the last year.
