LOL — when these two letters adorn a car of the few manufacturers that use them, we know that we are in the presence of something special, in general they are the pinnacle of performance of that same car. But what do they mean?
Unlike other acronyms, RS has several meanings depending on the builder. Interestingly, almost without exception, it is applied to higher-performance versions of a given model. What does it mean for each builder:
Porsche and Audi : Rennsport, a German word that simply means “racing”, mainly associated with the automobile. Sounds much better in German. Ex: Porsche 911 GT3 RS or Audi RS6.
Ford : Rallye Sport. Since 1968 it has graced the fastest Fords, gaining enormous fame in rallying. Ex: Ford Focus RS.
Renault : Renault Sport is the name of its sports division, being responsible for the “spicier” variants of several Renaults. Ex: Renault Megane RS.
Rallye Sport is also the meaning of the letters RS on cars like the Mitsubishi Evolution (naked variant, more suitable for tuning or competition), and even in "muscle cars" like the Chevrolet Camaro , since its first generation, despite being little more than a style pack.
