This is the new BMW M5 CS. The most powerful BMW ever

Anonim

BMW M5 CS : for the first time the BMW 5 Series now has an even sportier version than the M5 which, until now, was the most powerful in the range. The 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 block now yields a maximum of 635 hp and an impressive 750 Nm of maximum torque, which is even more available under the driver's right foot at a wider rev range (between 1850 rpm and above 5950 rpm).

The specific M Power cover, made of carbon fiber, hides the two turbochargers that have been optimized and also the improvements introduced in lubrication and cooling. Maximum injection pressure is 350 bar, which helps achieve shorter injection times and better fuel atomization for faster engine response as well as more efficient mix preparation.

The oil supply system uses a fully variable pump and is designed for extreme use on the track, where it can handle particularly high levels of longitudinal and transverse accelerations.

3.0s from 0 to 100 km/h and 305 km/h

The engine's response can vary according to the selected driving mode, from the calmest Efficient to the more aggressive Sport and Sport+, with which it is easier to achieve outstanding performance, such as those announced by the Bavarian manufacturer: 3, 0 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h (three tenths faster than the M5 Competition), 10.4s to 200 km/h (less 0.4s) and a top speed of 305 km/h (still, electronically limited).

The BMW M5 CS is equipped with the engine mounts used by the M5 Competition, which are stiffer than those of the “regular” M5 — 900 N/mm against 580 N/mm — with the aim of making the engine even more responsive. faster and accelerating the transmission of its power to the train.

Accompanying the drama of these numbers is a sound amplification system, with a double branch valve. The exterior sound is much stronger, covers a wider range and has a more exciting character, but it also varies according to the selected driving mode. If the driver only wants to decrease the decibel level, he can do so by pressing the sound control button M, which can be useful in situations where the M5 CS is passing through residential areas, for example.

Stiffer chassis and (almost) racing tires

The chassis base of the M5 Competition already has a more rigid version than the “normal” M5 (the result of modifications made to the springs, suspension and stabilizer bars), but to deal with the increase in performance (also resulting from the reduction in weight in 70 kg) in this CS, it presents a reduction of seven millimeters in the height to the ground, also counting on the shock absorbers developed for the M8 Gran Coupe. In addition to improving comfort at highway cruising speeds, these shock absorbers also reduce wheel load fluctuation, useful when driving close to the limits.

Standard tires are the more aggressive Pirelli P Zero Corsa, 275/35 R20 at the front and 285/35 R20 at the rear, mounted on forged M wheels, with Y-spokes and golden bronze finish, and the standard brakes are ceramic, allowing a reduction in mass — and even more, unsprung masses — of nothing less than 23 kg compared to those using the M5 Competition.

from driver to pilot

Because this is an ambivalent sports car, which can be used both on the road and on the circuit, whoever sits behind the wheel can be more of a driver or driver. so you are allowed to choose the Road, Sport or Track settings via the M button.

By selecting Sport, both the 12.3” central screen and the head-up display start to present information typical of a sportier driving, such as the M rev counter, the gearshift lights, a digital speedometer, turbo pressure , coolant temperature, tire condition, longitudinal and transverse acceleration, etc.

It is also possible to choose the preferred settings for the 4×4 system (which favors rear-wheel drive), engine, steering and suspension, save them and “call” them simply and quickly using the M1 and M2 buttons next to the steering wheel arms. And still vary the power distribution between the front and rear wheels, even being able to switch to only rear traction for more “freedom of movement” on the circuit (especially if the stability control is also set to its more “permissive” mode).

The more aggressive character of the M5 CS also manifests itself in terms of design, both exterior and interior. In the first case, there are several bodywork elements in carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and others in exposed carbon fiber. The double rim grille is finished in golden bronze, the same color used in the “M5 CS” logos. The bonnet is all made of CFRP, as are the divider in the front apron, the outer mirror covers (“given” by the M8), the additional rear spoiler in the trunk lid and the rear diffuser.

Inside, the four individual bacquets are noteworthy, the fronts being made of carbon and featuring illuminated M5 logos with Merino leather lining and red stitching. They are heated and electrically adjustable in height, seat cushion extension and backrest angle, while the side support can be changed pneumatically. The M steering wheel rim is encased in Alcantara and the shift paddles are made of carbon fiber.
