Porsche prepares batteries that charge in 15 minutes

Imagine this scenario: you are going to travel in a Porsche Taycan and the batteries are almost empty. For now, this situation means waiting around 22.5 minutes at a fast 800V charging station with a maximum power of 270 kW (and only to replace up to 80% of the batteries).

It is true that these figures are already impressive, however they do not seem to satisfy Porsche, which through a joint venture with the German company Customcells (specialized in lithium-ion cells) is preparing to produce batteries with a higher energy density than than the ones you currently use.

The goal is to create batteries with new (denser) cells that will reduce the charging time to 15 minutes. In addition to shorter charging times, higher density batteries make it possible to reduce the amount of raw materials needed to produce the batteries and reduce their production costs.

Porsche batteries
The most powerful battery currently used by the Taycan Turbo S offers 93.4 kWh of capacity. The objective is to improve these values.

Originally intended for Porsche models, these batteries can, according to the Executive Director of the German brand, Oliver Blume, reach models of other Volkswagen Group brands, namely Audi and Lamborghini.

the joint venture

Headquartered in Tübingen, Germany, this joint venture will be 83.75% owned by Porsche. Initially, the “workforce” will consist of 13 employees and, by 2025, this number is expected to grow to 80 employees.

The objective is to ensure that the new factory, located on the outskirts of Stuttgart, produces 100 Megawatt-hours (MWh) annually, a value sufficient to produce cells for the batteries of 1000 100% electric sports cars.

Battery cells are the combustion chambers of the future.

Representing an investment of several tens of millions of euros by Porsche, this project also has the support of the German federal government and the German state of Baden-Württemberg, which will invest around 60 million euros.
