Citroen AX. Winner of the 1988 Car of the Year in Portugal

It was during an oil crisis that the Citroën AX was developed and arrived on the market, reflecting this in its weight and concern with fuel economy. It came to replace the Citroën Visa, taking on the role of access model to the Citroën range.

Initially it was only available in three-door versions and with three petrol engines. Later came the Sport versions, five doors, and even 4×4 Piste Rouge.

One of its features were the 1.5 liter bottle holders at the front doors. Furthermore, we have not forgotten the one-arm steering wheel in the first version, later with three arms, and the simple and spartan interior.

Good fuel consumption was possible thanks to good aerodynamics (Cx of 0.31) and a low weight (640 kg). The engines also helped, especially the 1.0 version (later dubbed Ten) which, with just over 50 hp, gave a lot of energy to the bodywork. Continuing to talk about versions. Throughout its production, between 1986 and 1998, the Citroën AX saw many versions, which included diesel engines and commercial two-seater versions.

In addition to these we highlight the Citroën AX Sport, and the Citroën AX GTi. The first had shorter manifolds to gain space in the engine compartment, special wheels and a rear spoiler. It had a 1.3 liter block and 85 hp — it was extremely fast despite the power. The second, had a 1.4 liter engine and reached 100 hp with an equally sporty but less simplistic look. The Spartan interior also featured better quality finishes in the GTi version and leather seats (in the Exclusive version).
