No, we weren't mistaken about the name. Paul Newman, in addition to acting, was also a pilot in the 24 hours of Le Mans. This Porsche 935 was the car in which it debuted in the race and is up for auction.

Although the movie star's racing career is more closely associated with Datsun and Nissan, it was with the Stuttgart brand that Newman made his debut in the endurance race. At the wheel of the Porsche 935, the actor took victorious second place (1979), with the help of co-drivers Dick Barbour and Rolf Stommelen.

Auction house Gooding & Co has announced that it will sell this Porsche 935 with chassis number 009 00030 to one lucky bidder. There is no price estimate yet, but we can expect values ranging from four to five million euros.

After taking second place in the race in 1979, the Porsche 935 still added two more gold places. In 1981, piloted by Bobby Rahal, Brian Redman and Bob Garretson and in 1982, with Wayne Baker, Jim Mullen and Kees Nierop at the wheel. During these last two dates, the Porsche 935 was the only car that Apple Computers ever sponsored.

In 2006, Paul Willison – known as Stuttgart's model restoration guru – restored it to the original design (highlighted image), which earned him an award in his class at the 2007 Amelia Concurs d'Elegance .

The auction will take place during the month of August in Pebble Beach, California. Another good reason to say goodbye to holiday pay...
