A top-of-the-range electric from Volkswagen is coming and it will be capable of autonomous driving

The centerpiece of the “ACCELERATE” strategy, Project Trinity, the future 100% electric Volkswagen top of the range, was seen for the first time in a teaser.

With arrival on the market scheduled for 2026, it will take the sedan format, something that is surprising given the growing preponderance of SUV/Crossover.

Of course, given the time lag from its arrival on the market, there is still little data on Project Trinity. However, Volkswagen has already started to “raise the veil” about its future top of the range.

The unveiling of the ambitious “ACCELERATE” strategy fell to Ralf Brandstätter, Volkswagen CEO.

What do we already know?

For starters, we know that the resulting model from Project Trinity will be produced at the German brand's factory in Wolfsburg.

Developed with a special focus on software, Project Trinity will be able, according to Ralf Brandstätter, Volkswagen CEO, to establish itself as a reference in the fields of “autonomy, loading speed (“charging as fast as conventional refueling”) and digitization ”.

This focus on digitization will translate into the ability of the model, upon its launch, to be capable of Level 2+ autonomous driving, while being technologically prepared for Level 4 autonomous driving.

“We are using our economies of scale to make self-driving accessible to more people.

Ralf Brandstätter, Volkswagen CEO

In addition to all this, Volkswagen promises that not only Project Trinity as its other electric models will have fewer variants and will share many of the components with each other.

Project Trinity is expected to have dimensions close to those of Arteon.

Finally, according to Volkswagen, "The cars will have practically everything on board and customers will be able to activate the desired functions (on demand) at any time through the car's digital ecosystem." The goal? Reduce production complexity.

The "ACCELERATE" strategy

As we told you at the beginning of the text, Project Trinity is the centerpiece of the “ACCELERATE” strategy recently unveiled by Volkswagen. But, after all, what does this strategy consist of?

According to the German brand, this plan will allow it to solve some of the biggest challenges of the current car industry: digitization, new business models and autonomous driving.

In this way, Volkswagen intends to become a “more attractive brand for sustainable mobility”, transforming itself into a “software-focused mobility provider“.

Furthermore, under the “ACCELERATE” Volkswagen intends to increase the “weight of trams” in its sales. The goal is for, in 2030, 70% of its sales in Europe to be electric models and in China and the USA these will correspond to 50%. To this end, Volkswagen is preparing to launch at least one new electric model per year.

In the field of technology, Volkswagen aims to make the integration of software in cars and the customer's digital experience into its core competencies.

Finally, still under the “ACCELERATE” strategy, Volkswagen plans to launch a new business model, all thanks to the fact that the car becomes a software-based product.

The objective of the German brand is, through the offer of service packages, to generate additional revenue over the life of the vehicle. These services can be related to car charging, new software-based functions or autonomous driving services.
