The combustion-engine 911 still has a future, Porsche says so

At a time when many brands seem to be moving away from combustion engines (see the example of Smart and the controversy surrounding what Daimler AG will or will not do) and even having already unveiled its first electric model, the Taycan , Porsche remains convinced that the iconic combustion-engine 911 still has a future.

The assurance was given by the brand's CEO, Oliver Blume, who told Autocar: “I'm a big fan of the 911 and we will continue (with a gasoline engine) as long as we can. The secret is to think about more efficient gasoline engines and, maybe 10 years from now, the use of synthetic gasoline“.

Speaking of synthetic gasoline, according to the Porsche CEO, although it can no longer be used (it is still very expensive), this could turn out to be a solution that will allow the 911 to continue to use a combustion engine. As for the electrification of the 911, Blume stated that the only plan is a hybrid version, such as the brand already uses in the WEC races.

Porsche 911
It looks like in the near future we're going to continue to see an internal combustion engine like this in the back of the 911.

The pillars of Porsche

Porsche's strategy for the future is based on three pillars: vehicles with internal combustion engines, hybrids and 100% electric. According to Blume, Porsche's idea is to “offer in all segments — two-door sports cars, SUVs and saloons — models of these “three pillars”: gasoline, hybrids and electric”.

Porsche's CEO also stated: “We have a very clear strategy for the next 10 to 15 years (…) We will continue with gasoline engines and will continue with the hybrid offer. We are always thinking about how to design a high-performance hybrid and that is, I think, the reason behind the success of the Panamera and Cayenne hybrids“.

Porsche Taycan
Despite the bet on Taycan, Porsche does not plan to abandon internal combustion engines.

Still on the electrification of the Stuttgart brand, 60% of all models sold by Porsche in 2025 are expected to be electrified, something that, according to Blume, reveals that "there is a lot of potential for electric models in the second half of the next decade", something the Taycan, the Mission E Cross Turismo prototype and the future electric Macan seem to confirm.
