The data are from a study by the European Federation of Transport and Environment (T&E) recently released by the environmentalist association Zero and show that the Portuguese automobile market has the 5th largest share of 100% electric models.

In the first half of this (troubled) year, electric cars accounted for about 6% of sales in Portugal.

To find higher market shares we have to “travel” to Norway (where electric models account for 48% of total sales); the Netherlands (with 9.2%, the highest share in the EU); Sweden (7.3% share) and France (6.3%).

As for the market share of plug-in hybrid vehicles in Portugal, which are also included in this study, it stands at 5.8%. Taking this into account, in the first six months of 2020, plug-in cars (100% electric and plug-in hybrids) accounted for around 11% of the market share.

In fact, among the European Union countries, the Portuguese market has the 3rd largest market share of plug-in hybrids, only surpassed by Sweden (about 19%) and Finland (12.4%). But it is, once again, Norway that holds the largest market share, 20%.

The success could be even greater

According to the study by the European Federation of Transport and Environment, these results are a reflection of two factors: the existence of favorable taxation and a good implementation of charging infrastructure.

As an example of the influence of these factors the study gives to… Norway, of course. After all, in that country, plug-in electric and hybrid cars accounted for 2/3 of total sales (68%) in the first half of 2020.

With regard to the case of the Portuguese automobile market, Zero considers that “the limited supply of charging stations has negatively affected the purchase of fully electric vehicles by drivers, and is currently an important obstacle to the desired increase in these sales. automobiles".

Growing trend?

Also according to this study, there are some indicators that make it possible to predict that the growth trend in the market share of plug-in electric and hybrid cars will continue in the second half of the year.

For example, in July, Sweden achieved a market share of 29%, in the Netherlands 16% and in Germany 9%.
