Autumn brings mild-hybrid technology to the BMW 520d and 520d xDrive

BMW remains strongly committed to electrifying its range and after we discovered the plug-in hybrid version of the 5 Series in Geneva, the Bavarian brand has now decided to offer the 5 Series mild-hybrid technology.

The 5 Series versions that BMW decided to associate with the mild-hybrid system were the 520d and 520d xDrive (in van and saloon format) passing these to "marry" the Diesel engine with an integrated 48 V starter/generator system that emerges associated with a second battery.

This second battery can store the energy recovered during deceleration and braking and can be used either to power the 5 Series' electrical system or to provide more power when needed.

BMW 5 Series Mild-hybrid
From this fall the BMW 520d and 520d xDrive are mild-hybrid.

The mild-hybrid system that equips the Series 5 not only allows for a smoother operation of the Start & Stop system, but also makes it possible to completely turn off the engine when decelerating (instead of just disconnecting it from the drive wheels).

What do you get?

As usual, the main gains achieved with the adoption of this mild-hybrid system concern the consumption and emissions of the four-cylinder Diesel engine with 190 hp that animates the 520d and 520d xDrive.

Thus, according to BMW, the 520d in the saloon version has consumptions of 4.1 to 4.3 l/100 km and CO2 emissions between 108 and 112 g/km (in the van, consumption is between 4.3 and 4.5 l/100 km and emissions between 114 and 118 g/km).

BMW 520d Touring

The 520d xDrive in the sedan format has consumption between 4.5 and 4.7 l/100 km CO2 between 117 and 123 g/km (in the Touring version, consumption is between 4.7 and 4, 9 l/100 km and emissions between 124 and 128 g/km).

Scheduled for release on the market this fall (in November to be precise), it remains to be seen how much the mild-hybrid variant of the BMW 5 Series will cost.
