Jaguar E-PACE unveiled and now priced for Portugal

Jaguar and SUV may still seem like a strange combination, but few doubt that, in the near future, it will be the most natural thing in the world. The F-PACE, Jaguar's first SUV, is already the best-selling model of the British brand, and now Jaguar has just reinforced its commitment to the segment with the E-PACE, a compact SUV positioned below the F-PACE. And it won't stop there, when in September we get to know the production version of the I-PACE, Jaguar's proposal for a 100% electric SUV.

The new E-PACE is Jaguar's proposal for one of the fastest growing segments and where it will face rivals such as the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. A compact SUV, with just 4.39 m in length, but that the brand promises to have all the necessary space for young families. Proof of this are the 557 liters of luggage capacity, at the level of most vans that populate the segment.

Jaguar wants the E-PACE to be the sport of the segment, and nothing better than taking visual inspiration from F-TYPE. The E-PACE reveals a profile distinct from the F-PACE, with a descending roofline, yes… like a “coupé”. The inspiration for the F-TYPE continues in the definition of the front, using a similar grille-optics.

If in profile the proportions seem somewhat strange, with the front axle in a rearward position, and a front projection even larger than on the F-PACE (882 mm vs 834 mm), this is due to the different architecture of the E-PACE compared to the others Jaguar.

The E-PACE uses the D8 platform, the same as the Land Rover Discovery Sport, and like this, it means that the engine is placed transversely and not longitudinally, and the base architecture is that of a front-wheel drive and not a rear-wheel drive like the rest. Jaguar models.

Engines: all with 2.0 liters of capacity

It's because of its architecture that we see a front-wheel drive model returning to Jaguar's portfolio, something that hasn't happened since the X-Type. In addition to front-wheel drive, it is also available with four-wheel drive. The transmission is powered by either a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic.

The E-PACE is also the first Jaguar to have a range of powertrains made up entirely of the brand's latest Ingenium units, both diesel and petrol. Interestingly, all are 2.0 liters of capacity and four cylinders. Diesel has 150, 180 and 240 horsepower versions, while gasoline versions of 240 and 300 horsepower are available.

CO2 emissions can range from 124 g in the 150 hp diesel version with front wheel drive to 181 g in the 300 horsepower gasoline version.

E-PACE wants to be the sportiest

Graham Wilkins, E-PACE's principal engineer, says that while the architecture was that of a front-wheel drive model, it was no impediment to getting the E-PACE to behave like a typical Jaguar. At the front, the E-PACE comes with a MacPherson layout, and at the rear the suspension is an independent, multi-arm suspension called Integral Link. Wheels can range from 17 to 21 inches. As an option, in order to enhance its dynamic repertoire, it can also be equipped with electronically controlled dampers, which allow for different driving modes.

However, despite the dynamic goal in mind, the weight of E-PACE plays against him. It is heavier by a few tens of pounds than the F-PACE when compared to equivalent powertrains. It is a reflection of its base, which has steel as its main material. Nevertheless, aluminum can be found in some body panels, as well as magnesium in the crosspiece that supports the entire instrument panel.

The E-PACE not only wants to be the most dynamic, it also wants to surpass its rivals in off-road capabilities, with the British brand claiming that the compact SUV is the most capable off-road within its segment.

Interior marked by practicality and connectivity

Jaguar has focused particular attention on the interior, where it not only promises space and practicality, as you'd expect from an SUV, but also drew inspiration from F-TYPE in its design and driver-oriented orientation.

Another highlight is connectivity. Not only does it come with four 12-volt plugs and five USB plugs, the E-PACE can double as a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight devices. The infotainment system consists of a 10-inch touchscreen and provides access to applications such as Spotify.

Predictably, the E-PACE comes equipped with the latest safety and driving assistance technologies, such as a front stereoscopic camera, which allows the incorporation of an emergency braking system, capable of detecting pedestrians. It also comes with lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition and adaptive speed limiter. To better protect pedestrians in the event of being run over, the E-PACE has an airbag installed on the back of the bonnet.

Prices

Jaguar has already made available the prices of the E-PACE for Portugal, which can now be ordered. Its arrival on the market is scheduled for the end of the year. Check the price list below:
