E-GMP. The platform that will electrify the Hyundai Motor Group

Crucial not only to the success of Kia's “Plan S” but the new 100% electric brand IONIQ, Hyundai Motor Group's E-GMP platform made itself known and the truth is it promises… a lot.

The Hyundai Motor Group is no stranger to electrification — Ioniq, Niro, Kauai, Soul, etc. — but with this new modular platform it opens up new possibilities. The E-GMP can be used by different types of models in various segments, from sedans to compacts, passing through SUVs.

Common to all will be the fact that they have rear-wheel drive, with versions with a second engine on the front axle being planned to offer all-wheel drive. Speaking of mechanics, the Hyundai Motor Group says that models based on the E-GMP will feature an electric motor (whose dimensions are unknown), a single-ratio transmission (as is usual for electric cars) and an inverter, all of them housed in a single module.

Fast to load but not only

One of the main points of interest of the models based on the E-GMP is the fact that they are capable of being charged at 800 V or 400 V without the need for other components or adapters.

That said, models based on this new dedicated platform can be recharged in high-speed chargers of up to 350 kWh, where 80% of their battery capacity is replaced in just 18 minutes and five minutes are enough to add 100 km to autonomy. The maximum autonomy should be over 500 km (WLTP cycle).

Still in the field of charging, another of the interesting features of the E-GMP is that the models that use it will be able to supply energy not only to electrical devices (110 V/220 V) but even charge other electric cars!

According to the Hyundai Motor Group, this function allows you to supply up to 3.5 kW of energy, enough to keep a 55” television on for 24 hours.

As for the models that will be based on it, although their power varies depending on the segments in which they are inserted, Hyundai has already revealed that the top-of-the-range model (probably based on the Prophecy prototype) will be able to meet the 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5s and reach 260 km/h.

Despite being more compact than current Hyundai Motor Group engines, the engine being used by the E-GMP supposedly has a top speed 70% higher.

Curving well is mandatory

As if to prove that the “Biermann effect” is here to stay, one of the main focuses in the development of the E-GMP was precisely to ensure that it offers good dynamic behavior.

According to the Hyundai Motor Group, the new platform was designed to "offer the best cornering performance and stability at high speed."

This helps not only the fact that the battery pack is placed on the floor of the platform, that is, close to the ground (between the two axes), but also the advanced suspension system it uses, which at the rear is identical to the one used by the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class or by the Rolls-Royce Ghost.

As for its arrival on the market, the first model to use this new platform will be the IONIQ 5, a compact crossover, which will be the production version of the Hyundai Concept 45, presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2019.
