New Toyota Yaris (2020). First test in PORTUGAL

We were present at its first static reveal, but now we've finally been able to lead the new Toyota Yaris , the fourth generation of the Japanese SUV, perhaps the one that has generated the most curiosity, even for the way Toyota approached the development.

Following President Akio Toyoda's orders, the new Yaris also ceased to be a “bored Toyota”.

There is a clear cut with the predecessors, with the new Toyota Yaris being shorter and wider, and marginally shorter than the predecessor, despite the wheelbase having grown by 50mm. In other words, the proportions are markedly different — more “muscled” and more dynamic lines, but also somewhat more generic.

The main driver of this “revolution” is TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture), here in its GA-B variant, which also fundamentally affects driver positioning — 60mm further back than before, being more in the center of the car. The driver also sits lower, contributing to a center of gravity 15mm closer to the ground.

What's more, the new GA-B has the benefit of increasing structural stiffness by 35% over its predecessor, which theoretically will give the suspension stronger foundations to work better.

The suspensions, despite maintaining the same layout as the predecessor — MacPherson at the front and torsion bar at the rear — have new anchorage points and more rigid elements, ensuring more efficiency, even when the chassis is more demanding. Is it really so?

Diogo led a pre-production unit of the new Toyota Yaris in Portugal — another international presentation in our country — and first impressions behind his wheel are promising. You also get to know other aspects of the new Yaris, such as many of the equipment that will be present in the future range:

When will you arrive in Portugal?

The new Toyota Yaris is scheduled to arrive in Portugal next July, with two engines confirmed. THE hybrid , which has an unprecedented 1.5 l three-cylinder engine that works according to the most efficient Atkinson cycle, which justifies the benchmark 40% efficiency; it is a 1.0 pure gasoline three-cylinder engine — this generation will not have Diesel.

Regarding prices, these will only be advanced closer to the start date of commercialization of the new model.

And of course, we couldn't forget about the "bombastic" GR Yaris , the anabolic version that seems to have come straight out of the WRC onto the roads:
