If there is something that is not lacking for those who want to buy a Hyundai Kauai, it is an offer. After the combustion engine variants (both diesel and petrol) and the electric variant, the Hyundai Kauai Hybrid is the latest member of this very complete range.
Aesthetically, the only differences are the exclusive design wheels (which in the tested unit were the optional 18”)s) and the “Hybrid” logo on the rear, which denounces this version. Otherwise, it is practically impossible to distinguish the Kauai Hybrid from combustion engine versions.
Inside, the aesthetics remained unchanged (as well as the good ergonomics and general quality), the only novelty being the renewed infotainment system (easier and more intuitive to use) which, in the case of the unit we tested, had a 7-inch screen ” (in option it can have 10.25”).
Also unchanged were the dimensions of habitability, with the Kauai Hybrid having space to comfortably transport four adults and having a luggage compartment with 361 liters which, despite being able to meet most of the needs of a young family, is slightly below the standard. segment average.

Dynamically, the Kauai Hybrid continues to behave in a way that is predictable, safe and even something… fun. The steering is communicative and direct, and the way the Kauai Hybrid digests bad floors deserves the same accolades that we've already given its “range brothers”.

The great attraction of this version, the hybrid system, impresses for its smoothness and “normality” of operation, something that is not unrelated to the adoption of a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox instead of a CVT gearbox.
As for the performance, the 141 hp and 265 Nm of combined power resulting from the “marriage” between the 1.6 GDI of 105 hp and 147 Nm with an electric motor of 43.5 hp (32 kW) and 170 Nm allow the Kauai Hybrid to move. itself with pleasant aplomb (especially in “Sport” mode) despite its focus being, above all, the economy.
Focus that was more than fulfilled. When we activate the "Eco" mode (ours and the car's), it is possible to reach consumption in the region of 4.3 l/100 km . In normal driving on a circuit that mixed city, national roads and highway, it was possible to reach averages in the region of 5.0 to 5.5 l/100 km without difficulties.
Is the car right for me?
If you drive many kilometers in the city but still haven't been convinced by the charms of trams, then this Kauai Hybrid is, most likely, the ideal solution. It achieves consumption at the level of a Diesel on the open road and in cities it ends up circulating many times in electric mode without the inconvenience of having to recharge the batteries.
