After a period in which the various cars in the competition were put to the test in road tests, the Jury, composed of 19 journalists representing some of the most important Portuguese Media, which includes Razão Automóvel, it has already chosen which candidates remain in the race to succeed the SEAT Ibiza as Car of the Year in Portugal.
So, after the dynamic tests carried out by the judges of the Essilor Car of the Year/Crystal Wheel Trophy, the choice fell on these seven cars:
- Audi A1 1.0 TFSI 116 hp
- DS7 Crossback 1.6 Puretech 225 hp
- Hyundai Kauai EV 4×2 Electric
- Kia Ceed 1.0 T-GDi 120 hp
- Opel Grandland X 1.5 Turbo D 130 hp
- Peugeot 508 2.0 BlueHDI 160 hp
- Volvo V60 D4 190 hp

23 models in the competition, only one winner
After a year in which the national market saw sales grow by 2.7%, a total of 23 models were entered in the competition, which were summarized in these seven finalists. SEAT Ibiza and win the title of “Car of the Year/Trophy Essilor Crystal Wheel 2019”.In addition to the “Car of the Year/Essilor Crystal Wheel Trophy 2019” award, trophies will also be given to the best automotive product (version) in different segments of the national market. These awards will include six classes:
- Cityman;
- Familiar;
- Executive;
- Large SUV;
- compact SUV;
- Ecological.
The “Car of the Year” award aims to reward the model that represents not only a significant technological advance in the national automobile market, but also the best commitment for the Portuguese motorist in terms of economy (price and usage costs), safety and driving pleasantness.
This year, and for the first time since it was created, the “Essilor Car of the Year/Crystal Wheel Trophy 2019” award had the participation of the public in the election of the winner with the voting to be done in person during the presentation of the candidates.

The ceremony and awards ceremony for the Car of the Year/Trophy Essilor Volante de Cristal 2019, organized by the weekly Expresso and by SIC/SIC Notícias, will take place on the 28th of February.
