Rolls-Royce electric plane now flies

The world of aviation is one of the most difficult to decarbonise. The weight of the batteries still makes it impossible to create an electric airplane that is viable, which is why commercial aviation remains heavily invested in SAF, the so-called Sustainable Air Fuel, produced from sustainable raw materials.

But even so, the search for 100% emissions-free aviation has not yet been abandoned and the most recent sign comes to us by the “hand” of Rolls-Royce, whose aeronautics division is one of the main aircraft engine manufacturers in the world. .

Even so, the British company believes that there is a market for electric planes, especially recreational or short-haul aircraft, and for this reason it has just completed its inaugural flight with the “Spirit of Innovation”, a small aircraft — single-seater — powered by an engine electric that produces the equivalent of 544 hp of power (400 kW) and that drives a propeller mounted in the front.

Powering the entire electrical system is a battery that Rolls-Royce says has the highest energy density ever seen in an aircraft battery, but its specifications have not been revealed.

The premiere of “Spirit of Innovation” took place at Boscombe Down air base, in the United Kingdom, and lasted about fifteen minutes. The flight was a success.
