THE Nissan Leaf congratulations for having reached the mark of 5000 units sold in Portugal — it is the first electric car to achieve this in our country.

It is yet another milestone to add to the many that he has already accumulated throughout his career started in 2010, which continues with the current second generation (launched in 2017) which achieved the feat of being the best-selling tram in Portugal in 2019.

The delivery of unit number 5000 took place during the first 100% electric drive-in in Portugal organized by Nissan, which took place last weekend on the occasion of the UEFA Champions League Final.

Catarina Canteiro, owner of the Oficina dos Sabores restaurant, in Aveiras de Cima, is Leaf customer number 5000, here accompanied by António Melica, general manager of Nissan Portugal.

The Nissan Leaf 5000 was delivered to customer Catarina Canteiro, who justified the choice for the Japanese electric:

“Every day I travel around 140 km between the home-work route. The need to change a car was imminent, but now I wanted to opt for an economical, sustainable, comfortable, safe solution that would at the same time ensure space in the cabin and luggage compartment.”

“Receiving the news that I was client No. 5000 in Portugal was a very pleasant surprise! Well… it would be unfair to say it was quite enjoyable… actually it was exciting for the whole family. The fact that the Nissan LEAF #5000 belonged to me filled me with pride and meaning. (...)”

5000 Nissan Leaf sold, but the vast majority are recent

It is curious to see how the 5000 units sold in Portugal are distributed over the two generations, where we can find a parallel in the evolution of the electric car market.

The first generation, marketed between 2010 and 2017, sold around 1000 units around here. The second generation, launched in 2017, in just three years of career, has sold almost 4x more.

In the same period in which it sold 5000 units in Portugal, the Nissan Leaf has already surpassed the barrier of 500 thousand units sold on the planet.

"10 years after its launch, the Nissan LEAF continues to capture the preferences of national consumers in the electric car segment. It is therefore a great pride for us to be here today to celebrate the fact that our customers have made the Nissan LEAF in the first to reach 5000 units sold in Portugal (…)

Together, we managed to save more than half a million tonnes of CO2 per year in Portugal. So, as we congratulate and thank our customer 5000, it's all our LEAF and e-NV200 customers that we do too!"

Antonio Melica, General Director of Nissan Portugal

However, the next chapter in Nissan electric mobility has already been revealed and could find even greater success, as it will be combined with a crossover-type bodywork: the Nissan Ariya.
